Barb has been working as a Registered Social Worker for over 20 years in both rural and urban settings. She obtained her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Victoria and her Master of Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University. Her counselling experience has been in both the non-profit sector and within large organizations, such as Alberta Health Services.

Barb has worked in many cross-cultural settings, including within Indigenous communities and organizations. She uses a client-centred framework focusing on the inherent strengths that her clients possess. Her ability to develop respectful, honest and non-judgemental relationships leads to the feelings of comfort and safety necessary to enable her clients to make positive changes in their lives. She specializes in individual therapy with adolescents and adults, developing strategies and interventions to effectively manage challenges including trauma, anxiety, depression and grief.

Barb’s extensive experience leads her to practice within a trauma-informed framework, understanding that every person is different and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. She is able to draw from her use of several different therapeutic modalities, including but not limited to: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Motivational Interviewing to assist those she works with in getting the most out of their counselling experience.

CBT focuses on identifying, challenging and replacing our destructive thought patterns that have a negative influence on both our emotions and behaviors.

Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), is a brief, collaborative, and strength-based approach to therapy that focuses on identifying and achieving future-oriented solutions rather than analyzing past problems

The Motivational Interviewing (MI) process consists of four interconnected stages: Engaging the client in a collaborative relationship, Focusing on a specific goal for change, Evoking the client's own motivations and commitment to change, and Planning for action that the client will undertake.
